Internal Title: Research Scientist II, Oncology, Pathology and Biomarkers

About the role:
The Oncology Translational Research (OTR) Department at Novartis Biomedical Research is a global, laboratory-based research group, supporting the development of novel therapeutics in the Novartis Biomedical Research Oncology Disease Area. Within OTR, the Oncology Pathology and Biomarkers (OPB) group uses tissue-based, cell-based and soluble protein assays to understand target epidemiology and biology, mechanisms of action of drugs, and response/resistance biomarkers, ranging from early stages of target identification through Phase 3 clinical trials.

About the Role

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop tissue-based biomarker assays, e.g., Immuno Histochemistry (IHC), In Situ Hybridization, and Fluorescent Immuno Histochemistry (FIHC) to advance Novartis oncology programs
  • Support a range of modalities and disease indications within Oncology and opportunities will exist to expand their current skill set and take on additional experimental challenges, as appropriate
  • Develop single plex and multiplex IHC and FIHC automated assays to support clinical trials with minimal guidance
  • Interpret experimental data, generate hypotheses, provide data analysis and suggest next steps
  • Conduct routine image analysis using established platforms like HALO
  • Assist with transfer of assays to contract research organizations (CROs)
  • Serve as point of contact for project teams and researchers, both within and outside the organization
  • Present data and conclusions at internal meetings
  • Support external publications and presentations as needed
  • Deliver high‐quality data to impact drug discovery and projects in clinical development

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $84,000 - $126,000 / year. While salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Essential Requirements:

  • This position will be located at the Cambridge, MA site and will not have the ability to be located remotely. This position will not require travel as defined by the business (domestic and/ or international). Please note that this role would not provide relocation and only local candidates will be considered.
  • BS in Biological Sciences or related field
  • 2 years of industry experience developing single plex and multiplex immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence tissue-based assays
  • Experience working with teams in a matrixed environment and serving as point of contact for projects
  • High degree of organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Track record of independent experimental design and execution
  • Independent, well-organized and adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously.
