The Director, EU Public Affairs is instrumental in shaping policy and advocacy efforts for Novartis at the EU level, working across key policy priorities and monitoring European institutions. This role represents Novartis with key EU stakeholders as well as in key EU trade associations and maintains an effective external network with stakeholders at EU level.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive policy thought leadership for Novartis in key areas, aligned with overall EU policy priorities 
  • Build and maintain strong network and partnerships with defined stakeholders across the EU institutions and position Novartis as a trusted partner 
  • Monitor European institutions (Commission, European Parliament, Council of Ministers, European Court of Justice), with assistance from external agencies, and major industry trade bodies (EFPIA, EuropaBio, etc.)
  • Provide proactive analysis and deep, predictive insights on EU political environment, key issues likely to affect NVS business in Europe
  • Build and maintain stable relationships with key EU stakeholders
  • Represent Novartis in selected Committees of EU Trade associations (EFPIA, EuropaBio, etc.)

Essential Requirements

  • Proven work history in European Public Affairs either in EU Institutions, pharmaceutical industry, trade association, consultancy or NGO
  • Extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry, or highly regulated environment. with sound knowledge of health or social issues
  • Good understanding of political relationships and sensitivities in Europe 
  • Proven track record of impactful public affairs in Europe
  • Strong advocacy, influencing and communication skills with an established network, connections and deep policy expertise at EU level 
  • Ability to network effectively internally and externally in a multi-cultural environment 
  • Critical thinking, predictive and enterprise mindset, and outcome-focused performance management
  • Business partnership and proactive communications on policy issues and opportunities
  • Strategic planning and issue prioritisation 

Desirable Requirements

  • Fluency in additional European languages an advantage
  • Master’s degree (e.g. MSc) / University Diploma or equivalent in relevant discipline
