As a Principal Scientist, you will bring your expertise in molecular and cellular neuroscience to address key scientific questions related to neurodegeneration, protein aggregation, neuronal cell and organelle biology, and neuroinflammation. You will lead project design, execution, and report generation by applying cell-based assays and investigating preclinical models to support the discovery, validation and characterization of novel targets and therapeutics.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

-Contribute to creating and developing novel therapeutic strategies for Parkinson's disease, with an emphasis on mitochondrial/lysosomal function and dysfunction. Communicate project strategy, scientific vision, and data to key stakeholders.

- Lead and/or engage in the design, execution, and analysis of experiments to deliver high quality data and enable project decisions. Deliver impact to projects by following both technical and conceptual trends in the neurodegeneration field.

- Develop and integrate models of Parkinson's disease using both in vitro and in vivo systems in collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams in BR.

- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, consisting of experts in molecular biology, drug discovery, and biochemistry. Expertly relay information to all levels of the organization, as well as with our external partners and collaborators.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Neuroscience, Cell biology or a closely related field, and 6+ years of specific expertise on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of Parkinson's Disease.
  • A deep understanding of the pathophysiology of Parkinson’s disease and its interface with cell biological mechanisms, preferably related to mitochondrial and lysosomal pathways.
  • Demonstrated expertise in establishing both in vitro and in vivo models of Parkinson's disease to study disease progression and mechanisms.
  • Exceptional proficiency in various laboratory methodologies within neuroscience and neuronal cell biology including biochemistry, imaging and molecular profiling.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, diligent attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a complex matrix teams. Thinking creatively to tackle scientific and operational challenges in a fast-paced drug discovery environment
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Proven track record in leading collaborative projects.

  • Strict adherence to compliance with institutional policies, laboratory safety and animal welfare guidelines, and regulatory requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD and related Post-Doc
  • Experience in human iPS-derived neuronal models. 
  • Experience in stereotaxic surgeries in rodents.

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $107,000 - $160,000/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
