#LI-Onsite, Cambridge, MA About the role: Data Scientists are core to bringing medicines to patients; they drive, support, and sustain the portfolio from the earliest stages of biological discovery to first in human studies and beyond. We are looking for an exceptional computational biologist with oncology expertise to lead our global team of data scientists within the Novartis Biomedical Research Oncology Disease Area.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Driving high-caliber, interdisciplinary research grounded in computational biology, applying a deep understanding of early biology/target discovery, drug discovery, biomarker discovery and translational investigation as well as an understanding of the computational and data-management infrastructure required to support these programs.

  • Interfacing with all stages of drug discovery, driving insights into target discovery, mechanism of action, biomarker discovery, back translation, and clinical trial support and analysis, contributing directly to hypothesis discovery as well as hypothesis testing across Oncology.

  • Leader, thought-partner and collaborator to the global Oncology organization, while driving and implementing a forward-looking vision for Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), guiding external partnerships and integrating with the broader Novartis Research Informatics communities.

  • Serve as a member of the Oncology Disease Area leadership team as well as the Oncology Disease Area Decision Board contributing to our overall scientific strategy and mission.

  • Represent oncology on the Biomedical Research Computational Science Council (CSC - a group advancing the interests and impact of all data science capabilities across BR).

  • Build, implement and manage a cutting-edge and impactful portfolio of AI/ML related programs with Oncology target and drug discovery project teams and drug discovery platforms.

  • Position AI-aided drug discovery contributions to deliver and support progress of the portfolio, enable new kinds of therapeutic discoveries, shorten cycle times, and increase efficiency.

  • Lead, develop and inspire a global team of Oncology DS Experts based in Basel, Cambridge and San Diego.

  • Identify, recommend, and evaluate external opportunities for strategic AI collaborations and engage in and/or lead resulting cross-functional, global collaborations.

  • Act as a mentor to Data Science and AI/ML experts.

  • Lead or contribute to key cross-divisional strategic data and digital projects and initiatives.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $313,600 and $470,400/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Essential Requirements:

  • This position will be located at the Cambridge, MA site and will not have the ability to be located remotely. This position will require 10-15% travel as defined by the business (domestic and/ or international).

  • Minimum of a University Degree with a PhD or MD equivalent in computer science, data science, biology, chemistry or medicine.

  • People management experience.

  • Deep understanding in oncology of early biology/target discovery, drug discovery, biomarker discovery and translational investigation.

  • Experience in establishing and executing on an organizationally-aligned strategy for data management, scientific focus and priorities.

  • Experience in applying advanced analytics in the pharma or healthcare sector, ideally in a research environment.

  • Expertise in bringing advanced analytics insights and actions to a large mature organization.

  • Proven track record in achieving scientific business outcomes.

  • Substantial experience leading internal and external high performing diverse teams in matrix organizations.

  • Solid track record of high impact, peer reviewed publications.

  • Fostering teamwork and collaboration throughout a large, distributed, multi-level, and multi-cultural organization, and building strong collaborative relationships with peer functions.

  • Well-developed and inspiring leader with ability to influence senior leadership.

  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and influencing skills and demonstrated track record of exceptional teamwork.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.

  • Strategic thinker able to build a portfolio which enables key progress in AI/digital adoption and related productivity and pipeline gains.

  • Recognized internally and externally by key stakeholders; in depth understanding of external environment and trends.

  • Ability to execute and prioritize well in a complex matrixed environment.

  • Ability to manage to financial, operational, compliance and regulatory guidelines.
