Summary

Location: Basel, Switzerland

Role Purpose:
Set scientific standards and bring scientific rigor in PHAD to the next level of excellence and create ONE scientific mindset. Focus on scientific questions in the NCE parenteral field with aim to build new platform. Inspire scientific innovation and enhance scientific-based approaches with systematic knowledge exchanges inside PHAD (20%) & within PDU specialty (80%) as well as through external engagement with academia and industry partners.
Identify, introduce and assess the impact of initiatives and guidelines relating to development of NCEs originating internally (e.g. TRD Innovation Thesis) and externally (e.g., external associations) and drive implementation in PHAD.

About the Role

Ensure scientific rigor across PHAD and build ONE scientific mindset.

  • Inspire and energize the PHAD organization to explore, develop and implement cutting edge development, production, and digitalization technologies.
  • Enable and support the link between breakthrough scientific development and application to projects and lead input for innovation thesis and programs; sponsor and contribute to science /innovation forums across PHAD.
  • Define a set of scientific standards and policies, with identified and controlled overlaps, and challenge implementation by defining a governance model to cascade and track implementation across the disciplines.
  • Define standard for scientific risk management, lead and ensure alignment across the disciplines.
  • Lead the evaluation and prioritization of new technologies/innovation/data science programs in PHAD.
  • Sponsor scientific excellence activities or networks in PHAD.
  • Act as an ambassador for the Novartis Culture – Inspired, Curious and Unbossed and promote a culture of Innovation by coaching junior associates to ideate.

 

Inform scientific capability building

  • Assess new scientific advancement, capability & skills requirements and the IP landscape with regards to impact on existing and future development processes. Ensure cross-functional alignment to cover gaps, to build future capabilities and oversee the implementation in the disciplines within PDU Specialty, with a focus on building the new platform capability (e.g. siRNA, RLT) .
  • Scout new technologies and approaches and identify needs to develop lacking capabilities.
  • Continuously evolve the scientific career path by mapping capabilities required to best serve the product portfolio and inform a state-of-the-art capability build to ensure constant education of scientific roles across the organization.
  • Lead the team to address key scientific questions and develop best practices on scientific storytelling
  • Develop, mentor and coach other team members, act as a trusted go-to person for associates, helping them to grow especially in scientific business understanding, influencing and communication (presentation skills)

 

Facilitate knowledge management & exchange

  • Foster scientific collaboration across all disciplines & geographies and sponsor PHAD scientific networks by acting as key interface and coordinator across the disciplines within PHAD.
  • Provide the frame for KM (Knowledge management) and develop new PHAD KM paradigm based on data science.
  • Partner with other NCE Scientific Advisors to cross fertilize knowledge sharing, coordinate information exchange within NCE community, unite on key synergistic NCE scientific events and cross coaching & mentoring of NCE scientists.
  • Build and maintain a close Network with partners in research and profiling to ensure drug delivery considerations are an element of product design already at discovery and early development stages

Represent PHAD in an active dialogue with external associations

  • Drive collaboration and dialogue with regard to new and/or complex modalities, technologies, regulatory procedures and concepts, which are not yet subject of guidance or which are in a draft -/ commentation - / revision phase. Provide input, perform pilot studies. Focus on parenteral platforms.

External engagement

  • Build and maintain strong collaboration and networks with academia, drive and foster engagement with industry partners (e.g. industry fora, ICH, technology scouting etc.) and represent PHAD in scientific congresses and with lectures and industry meetings (i.e., roundtables)

 

As a member of the PDU Specialty LT, actively contribute to PDU Specialty strategy, vision and operations; represent PDU and PHAD cross-functional decision-/governance boards (as appropriate).
