Data science internship at Novartis Biomedical Research (BR)

About the Role

The Oncology Department of Novartis Biomedical Research in Basel, Switzerland is looking for a data science intern to work on computational biology and software/data engineering projects for up to 6 months. The intern will contribute to the development and maintenance of research pipelines of high throughput sequencing data (e.g., RNA-seq, single cell, low pass WGS).

You will join an enthusiastic team of cancer computational biologists who are passionate about using data science to better understand and combat cancer. You will learn to process, store and analyze heterogeneous datasets and be in a unique position to develop a broad understanding of the cutting-edge computational approaches used in the early stages of drug discovery.

Start date: as soon as possible

Duration : 6 months


Responsibilities:

  • Development and maintenance of research pipelines,
  • Integration of pipelines in an existing monitoring dashboard system,
  • Benchmark pipelines in different execution environments.

 Requirements:

  • Master's student or recent master's degree in a quantitative field (e.g., bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, computer science) or equivalent experience, ideally obtained within 6 months of the potential starting date,
  • Solid programming skills, in Python and/or R,
  • Experience with workflow management systems, (e.g., Snakemake, WDL),
  • Highly motivated and curious, with a keen interest in learning,
  • Good communication and organizational skills,
  • Excellent written and oral English

Optional but desirable skills:

  • Some experience with high throughput sequencing data,
  • Some knowledge of dashboards for visualization (e.g., Dash or/and Shiny),
  • Knowledge of best practices for reproducible research (e.g., version control, conda, container technologies).
