As part of the Chemical and Analytical Development (CHAD) organization, you will join the Biocatalysis / Protein Engineering Team to unlock the next breakthroughs in biocatalysis. The position is a perfect opportunity for enthusiastic scientists to apply their own expertise in an exciting and innovative pharmaceutical environment. With a solid understanding of enzyme mechanisms and a strong background in (bio)chemistry and molecular biology, you will support the development of novel enzymes to establish efficient and sustainable synthetic routes to key building blocks and APIs of our development portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Generate reliable 3D models of enzymes and perform in silico docking for substrates/products/transitions states in the active site of an enzyme.

  • Design libraries of mutants and timely analyze high throughput data for protein engineering projects.

  • Conduct genome mining to identify novel biocatalysts.

  • Carry out quantum mechanics calculations on reaction trajectories to evaluate the feasibility of chemical transformations.

  • Manage the LIMS system of the Biocatalysis Team and assist the storage of experimental data by developing upload protocols, creating new projects in the database with appropriate user access control and monitoring them to guarantee adherence to best practices for data annotation.

  • Act as single point of contact for internal and external IT support to ensure smooth update and debugging of software installation.

  • Define appropriate testing strategies and complete user acceptance tests for new software tools and software updates.

  • Develop and maintain data analysis pipelines and workflows tailored to high throughput screening data (including ML/AI), considering ease of use in daily operations by multidisciplinary team.

  • Support molecular biologists with NGS data analysis upon request.

  • Train team members on best use of software suite developed for enzyme engineering.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD in computational or structural biology with a minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral or industrial experience

  • Hybrid profile with both wet and dry lab experience preferred

  • Experience in protein engineering and/or biocatalysis

  • Comfortable in the use of structure visualization software such as MOE, Discover Studio, Pymol etc. and experienced in computational protein design software

  • Solid understanding of statistics

  • Python and R programming experience

  • Ability to work with multiple operating systems, including Linux (AWS instance or locally) and Windows

  • Knowledge of SQL databases (Oracle)

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English essential, basic knowledge of German desired

  • Team player mindset, comfortable to collaborate with many individuals across disciplines and in multidisciplinary teams
