Schaftenau liegt in der Tiroler Gemeinde Langkampfen nahe Kufstein. Der Standort gehört seit 1958 zum Unternehmen. Seine Übernahme machte die damalige Biochemie zum seinerzeit größten Pharmaunternehmen Österreichs. Wasserperoxyd und Salicylsäure wurden ursprünglich dort hergestellt, später auch Heparin und Pankreatin sowie Schilddüsenhormone.
2004 ging die Zellkulturanlage in Betrieb, und seither befindet sich der Standort in rasanter Entwicklung. 2015 wurde eine hochmoderne Biologika-Produktion für Fertigspritzen und Autoinjektoren, genannt „BioInject“, eröffnet. 2021 startet BioFuture, eine der weltweit modernsten Anlagen zur Herstellung therapeutischer Proteine mithilfe kontinuierlicher und hochflexibler Prozesstechnologie. Somit werden in Schaftenau sowohl Biosimilars als auch innovative Biologika entwickelt und produziert.
Neben der einzigartigen Expertise auf dem Gebiet der Zellkultur-Technologie ist Schaftenau auch Kompetenzzentrum für die Herstellung komplexer Mikropartikel, die für einen Wachstumshemmer zur Anwendung kommen.

Roland Gander, Site Head Drug Substance Schaftenau, und Mario Riesner, Site Head Drug Product Schaftenau, sind für die Herstellung von Biologika am Standort verantwortlich. Mit ihren Bereichen decken sie für viele Produkte den gesamten Wertschöpfungsprozess ab – vom Wirkstoff bis hin zum Fertigprodukt, wie es dann dem Patienten verabreicht wird.
Kommunikationsleiterin Julia Ager-Gruber hat die beiden getroffen und mit ihnen über die rasante Entwicklung Schaftenaus in den vergangenen Jahren und ihre Vision für den Standort gesprochen.

Schaftenau. One location becomes a biotech competence center
Schaftenau is located in the Tyrolean community of Langkampfen near Kufstein. The site has been part of the company since 1958. Its acquisition led to what was then called Biochemie, the largest pharmaceutical company in Austria at the time. Water peroxide and salicylic acid were originally produced there, later also heparin and pancreatin as well as thyroid hormones.
In 2004, the cell culture facility started its operation, since then the site has been in rapid development. In 2015, a state-of-the-art biologics production facility for pre-filled syringes and auto-injectors, called "BioInject", opened up. Later in 2021, BioFuture, one of the world's most modern facilities for the production of therapeutic proteins using continuous and highly flexible process technology, will be inaugurated. Thus, both, biosimilars and innovative biologics, are being developed and produced in Schaftenau.
In addition to its unique expertise in the field of cell culture technology, Schaftenau is also a centre of excellence for the production of complex microparticles used in a growth inhibitor.
