This position belongs to the Genetically Engineered Models (GEMs) Breeding Team within the In vivo Science & Technology (IST) unit at Comparative Medicine (CM). This team actively manages efficient breeding and maintenance of animal models generated in-house to support in vivo research for drug discovery and development in Biomedical Research (BR), Novartis. CM is a part of the in vivo pre-clinical research community and is the central partner for in vivo scientific activities at BR.

About the Role

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Key driver for enhancing efficiency within a highly active breeding program, in collaboration with a team of breeding coordinators in GEMs.
  • Work closely with the Novartis research community to manage, optimize and prioritize breeding colonies of genetically modified rodent models intended for target validation and drug discovery.
  • Collaborate closely with our Animal Engineering (AE) team to facilitate the integration of newly developed animal models into the breeding core, utilizing globally standardized software for oversight.
  • Collaboration and support across the Global GEMs teams for efficient management of internal and external breeding activities.
  • Support the implementation of software initiatives within the global platform
  • Strong oversight and accountability for breeding colonies at external CROs.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with all institutional and regulatory protocols, policies, and guidelines.
  • Conduct presentations of data and results at local and global meetings as needed.
  • Perform supplemental tasks in assisting the Manager and other delegated programmatic oversight duties as specified.

Role Requirements:

  • MS or BS degree in Biology, Animal/Veterinary Science or related field
  • Strong knowledge of Transgenic models/Genetics
  • 5+ years of experience, preferably working in an animal research environment. Level of the position will be commensurate with experience.
  • ALAT certification preferred or pursued after start
  • Advanced understanding of genetically engineered rodent models with a focus on breeding colony management
  • Experience operating within a barrier-maintained facility carrying out in vivo studies utilizing micro-isolator techniques
  • Detail oriented with knowledge of the IACUC/AWC compliance and regulations
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, local animal welfare laws, departmental SOP’s and Good Laboratory Practices
  • Able to lift 50 lbs., and work from standing position for prolonged time periods. May be required to work weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather.

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $97,600- $146,400/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period.  Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
