Disease Area X, a division within Novartis Biomedical Research, focuses on diseases of critical human organs, including the kidney. We are seeking an innovative scientist to join our interdisciplinary Discovery and Translational Pharmacology group in support of our efforts to progress novel medicines toward the clinic. This role will involve designing and implementing in vivo and ex vivo studies to identify new therapeutic targets, with a focus on renal diseases, and to test and validate novel therapeutics for our priority diseases.

Internal Job Title – Research Scientist II

Position Location: Cambridge, MA, onsite

Disease Area X, a division within Novartis Biomedical Research, focuses on diseases of critical human organs, including the kidney.  We are seeking an innovative scientist to join our interdisciplinary Discovery and Translational Pharmacology group in support of our efforts to progress novel medicines toward the clinic.   This role will involve designing and implementing in vivo and ex vivo studies to identify new therapeutic targets, with a focus on renal diseases, and to test and validate novel therapeutics for our priority diseases.

Your responsibilities:

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct in vivo experiments with rodent models, primarily of kidney disease, including dosing novel therapeutics; pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analyses; clinical observations including blood and urine collection; ultrasound, telemetry, and similar non-lethal readouts; and harvesting of tissues for analysis of efficacy.
  • Execute standard molecular biology techniques to evaluate therapeutic effect (such as RT-qPCR, ELISAs, and Western blots).
  • Establish collaborative working relationships with scientific partners across the Biomedical Research organization
  • Implement established and novel technologies to ensure scientific excellence and impactful results
  • Ability to present scientific results to project teams within DAx and in the broader Novartis community

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • B.A./B.S. or M.S. degree in a biological or chemical science discipline and 2+ years of relevant experience in a related field. This is not a PhD-level position.
  • Hands-on experience with pre-clinical rodent models, including the ability to perform routine procedures including dosing (PO, IP, SC).
  • Experience with blood, urine and tissue collection
  • Proficiency performing biochemical assays (RT-qPCR, western blot, ELISA)
  • Ability to integrate into a highly-collaborative, multi-person team
  • Fluency and excellent communication skills in English.
  • A desire and willingness to learn new, cutting-edge techniques

Desirable characteristics:

  • Experience with rodent models of kidney disease
  • Experience with advanced techniques related to kidney biology (eGFR, ultrasound)

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $84,000 to $126,000/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
